JOB DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision of a career law enforcement officer, exercises responsibilities for enforcing state and local laws related to the public safety and welfare. Exercises independent judgment in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations, exercising safety practices and procedures. Works under stressful and high-risk conditions. JOB REQUIREMENTS: Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Must be able to pass a thorough background check as mandated by the State Criminal Justice Academy including a credit report, a driver’s history report, and a SLED criminal history report. Must pass a required physical exam including drug screening. Must posses a valid SC driver’s license. Must attend mandated training sessions and respond to emergency scenes as available. Must successfully complete the 60 hour State Police Reserve Course and pass the final, written exam with a minimum score of 75%. In-service training such as, but not limited to firearms training and emergency vehicle operations training must be successfully completed on a continual basis. Police Reserve Officers assist as available in projects such as public gatherings, athletic events, parades, etc. Officers also assist career law enforcement officers on routine patrol and special enforcement situations. Police Reserve Officers are required to volunteer a minimum of 20 hours per month including mandated training and special events. Police Reserve Officers receive a stipend of $50 per month.
